Did you know that 40% of people say they notice a person’s smile before any other physical feature? Having a shining set of white teeth is something that everyone wants. Not only can it tell a lot about your dental health, but it can also boost your self-confidence and make you feel more comfortable around people.
However, other research has shown that constant use of teeth-whitening products can damage your teeth by causing erosion of enamel. This can lead to tooth sensitivity while consuming hot and cold food or drinks. Also, many teeth-whitening treatments at dental clinics can be very expensive.
What if we told you there were natural remedies for teeth-whitening that you can make with ingredients from your own kitchen? They are simple and very efficient, plus budget-friendly.
Coconut oil has become a popular home remedy when it comes to its various health benefits. It is rich with lauric acid, known for killing bacteria and reducing inflammation. Simply take one spoonful of oil and swish it around your mouth. Repeat this at least 3 times a week and the results will be amazing!
For centuries, apple cider vinegar has been used effectively as a cleaning product and a natural antibiotic as well. Its antibacterial ingredient, acetic acid, is what makes it useful for cleaning your mouth and whitening your teeth. Rub the vinegar on your teeth and leave it for a couple of minutes, or gargle a mixture of vinegar and water for 2 – 3 minutes. For even better results, do this before brushing your teeth in the morning. Be careful, though and try to limit its use to a few times a week since acetic acid can also erode the enamel on your teeth.
Baking soda is a very popular toothpaste ingredient thanks to its natural abrasive properties. It can help you scrub away those yellow coffee stains and, while creating an alkaline environment in your mouth, it can also prevent bacteria from spreading around. If you mix it with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide you can make your own toothpaste and use it once a week for instant results.
Admit it! This Asian spice that gives curry its beautiful yellow color isn’t the first thing you’d think of when it comes to teeth-whitening. But it actually works! Mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder with water to make a paste and brush your teeth with it for about 2 – 3 minutes. The moment you’re done with the rinsing, you will notice much brighter and whiter smile.
We saved the sweetest for last! Simply smash up a fresh strawberry to extract the juice and then apply this delicious mixture all over your teeth. Leave it there for a minute or two before rinsing thoroughly afterwards. The malic acid in strawberries will help exfoliate your teeth and make them appear whiter.
No matter how these natural teeth-whitening techniques may be effective, don’t underestimate the value of regular brushing and flossing.
I found it works to brush on some hydrogen peroxide with a qtip and let it sit for three mins or so. It works much better than swishing it…plus putting HP on your gums isn’t great via the swishing. Just apply it with a qtip to your teeth..
My sister’s wedding is coming up and I would love to have my teeth looking pearly and white for the occasion. It is good to know that apple cider vinegar can be a natural way to whiten teeth. I did not realize that its antibacterial ingredient, acetic acid, is what makes it useful for cleaning your mouth and whitening your teeth. I will definitely be trying this method, thanks.
Baking soda is a gritty substance like sandpaper so be careful that you have enough hydrogen peroxide mixed in with the soda — because if you don’t it can very well scrub the enamel right off your teeth.
An interesting read on how various fruits can help to keep our teeth naturally white. I found the Turmeric powder method quite unique. Will try out. Thanks for sharing this awesome post!
Ways you can naturally whiten your teeth, while also protecting enamel, include using apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide; coconut oil pulling; eating a healthy diet; brushing and flossing; and trying activated charcoal.
I had a laser teeth whtening done three years ago, the results i got were amazing. However, recently i’ve noticed the shade of teeth getting back to what they were. After stumbling upon your article i tried baking soda and voila my teeth were white again, thank you so much for helping me out. Much love 🙂
Hi Cassie,
We are so glad to hear we gave you an idea on how to whiten your teeth. 🙂
However, most dentists offer whitening treatments that are much stronger than these natural remedies. They involve bleaching the teeth, which may be more effective for severe tooth discoloration.
Nice blog, awesome tips. Natural ways demand discipline and determination.
I have tried the coconut oil route and I didn’t really see any differences but most people swear by it. Great advice here.
