Best Thanksgiving Facts to Talk about over Turkey and Gravy

Every year on the fourth Thursday of November, families across the U.S. gather with their loved ones to feast on turkey, watch football and give thanks to and for each other. But there is much more to this Holiday than just that.
Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that allows us to learn more about sharing, gratitude and compassion for others. It’s a good reminder that we all need to take time to show appreciation and spread kindness. This is why it’s important to talk about the holiday’s true meaning.

Here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving tradition:

  • The first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts in the autumn of 1621 and lasted three days.
  • President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving, but it wasn’t until 1941 that Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday.
  • No turkey was served on the first Thanksgiving feast. It is believed that pilgrims ate fish, geese, nuts, cabbage, goat cheese and pumpkin (no pumpkin pie though).
  • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird instead of the bald eagle. He thought the bald eagle had a “bad moral character.”
  • Almost 90% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. The estimated number of turkeys eaten each Thanksgiving is 46 million!
  • The ‘wishbone’ of the turkey is used in a good luck ritual on Thanksgiving Day.
  • For nearly 70 years, the president has pardoned at least one turkey. The luckiest bird gets to live out the rest of its life on a farm.
  • The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City took place in 1924. It was originally launched by Macy’s employees and it featured animals from the Central Park Zoo. Nowadays, 3 million people attend the parade while 44 million watch it live on TV.

  • In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to move Thanksgiving up in order to stretch out the holiday shopping season. Black Friday didn’t become a popular shopping “holiday” until the 1960s.
  • And the last random fact of the day – In 2013, our company changed its name from ‘Violight’ to ‘Violife’ while refreshing its packaging and website, but still keeping the company logo identical to what it used to be. We wanted to make sure our customers still recognized the company they grew to know and love. We have come a long way since 2004 — from our highly-styled UV sanitizers to our first set of Slim Sonic toothbrushes. Today, Violife products are sold in over 20 countries around the world, and we are proud to partner with some of the top retailers here in the USA.

Although probably not your typical Thanksgiving fact,we hope that this little reminder of how far we’ve come is as exciting for you as it is for us. This is the time of year that we reflect on where we’ve been and set our sights on the next iteration of our growing company. We are grateful for our great sense of family, fun, hard work, and amazing products. With millions of happy customers all over the globe, we are beyond THANKFUL for an opportunity to share our Vio-‘life’ with all of you!
Happy Thanksgiving!
